So, we're driving through Sioux Falls on our way to Illinois and we're looking for a decent asian restaurant to have dinner at. We look online and there's this Cambodian/Laotian/Vietnamese restaurant that has some good reviews on Yelp. Well, there's one review that talks about getting food poisoning there but we chalk that up to being an outlier. So we drive there and, to our disappointment, we find that they are closed for five days for the 4th of July holiday. Why close for 5 days? So now we need a plan B. We punch our hotel's address into the GPS and start looking for places to eat along the way. MacDonalds? Nah... Hey, over there, a big sign that says "Szechwan." Maybe... So we pull in and it's about an hour until closing. We walk in and the decor of the place is just amazing. Massive Chinese decorations all over. Cool. Black Pepper beef - that sounds good. The wife goes for Hunan Fish. We were't expecting much. After all, this is a spur of the moment thing and we're happy if the meal is decent. The food turned out to be great! much better than expected. So, good food, great decor, the service was great as well. Five stars. We were kind of sad we were only passing through. We would have liked to go back again.

I was hoping for more...spice/heat/flavor. I ordered the sour and spicy soup and the Szechwan Shrimp to go and asked for it spicy, even let the guy know that I like things Korean hot and he seemed to understand but the kitchen didn't seem to get the message. The soup was ok with a very lightly sour taste but not a lot of heat. It had been thickened slightly but not so much that it was gloppy like some Chinese soups I have had. The shrimp were battered and deep fried and were quite tasty. The "Szechwan" component was a slightly spicy soy based sauce that was packaged in a separate container. It was slightly salty (much more soy sauce and it would have been way too salty) with some pepper flakes but not a lot of heat. It was lacking in the punch you get from Szechuan peppercorns. It was not a bad order but nothing made me want to run back for more.

I ordered hot and sour soup for appetizer. It was satisfactory. My entree, Szechwan chicken, was not at all satisfactory. All I could taste was salt.

Extra star for the INSANE decor - I felt like I walked into The Forbidden Palace condensed into this restaurant, and all that golden, dragony, carvy, asian kitsch running up into the high high ceiling just stopped me in my tracks the minute I walked through the elaborate red metal-studded front door (gooooonnnnnggggg.... can you hear it??) That big round decorative thing by the door... There's some sort of irony in my being Chinese, from CA, standing in awe at this more-chinese-than-chinese interior in Sioux Falls, SD. Too bad I was underwhelmed by the food, but I wasn't expecting to be "whelmed" anyway b/c hey, this is pretty much the only chinese restaurant in town. Have to say that another reviewers' comment about the spicy and sour soup was pretty true, but then everything tasted like it afterwards (soy sauce everything...) that's not how chinese food is, I'm afraid. And pan fried noodles in this part of the world means crispy wonton strips, not real noodles, so be warned.

I was recently visiting my family in Minnesota, a 2-hour drive from this restaurant, and we seriously debated driving out just for the sizzling-rice soup. We decided it was crazy. However, anytime I am in the general Sioux Falls area, I go to this restaurant and order the soup. There other dishes are good too, but take my word for it and order the sizzling rice soup once!

Standard Chinese restaurant atmosphere. Excellent service. Nothing but fresh ingredients. No MSG. The hot and sour soup is the best!

Spicy & Hot Soup was very good. Egg Foo Yung was OK. Service was excellent.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
